MCC Meat Canning

Next Event: April 13, 14 & 15, 2026

Each spring, the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) mobile meat canner comes to the Material Resource Center to join volunteers in a long-standing tradition of service that has been going strong for more than 65 years. The mobile canner is a specialized unit that helps preserve meat — typically turkey, chicken, beef, or pork — by sealing it in cans that can be stored and shipped safely to people in need around the world.

Why it matters: Canned meat provides valuable protein and nutrients to communities where fresh meat is costly or unavailable, especially in regions affected by poverty, drought, conflict, natural disaster, and displacement. For many families and children, these canned meals are a significant source of nourishment and hope.

What volunteers do: When the canner is here, volunteers of all ages and abilities are needed to:

  • Help fill cans with prepared meat

  • Weigh and seal the cans

  • Wash and label finished products

  • Assist in packing the canned meat for shipment

No prior experience is required — the work is hands-on, team-oriented, and a meaningful way to serve alongside others.

Get involved: Whether you can spare a few hours of your time, help raise funds to cover the cost of meat and materials, or invite a group to participate, your contribution amplifies MRC’s global impact. Volunteers not only help produce food for others — they help share compassion and practical care in the name of Christ.
